Assistant Director

Position Title: Assistant Director 

Location: Utica, NY 

Schedule: Full Time, 32 hours a week 

Benefits: Full Time Employee benefits include health insurance, paid holidays, vacation time, and sick time. Free meals included. 

Reports To: Executive Director 

Salary Range: $35K-$45, pay dependent on experience

Hope House is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing meals, warmth, and support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. We offer a safe and welcoming environment where guests can receive nourishing meals, respite from the streets and be treated with dignity.  

Hunger is a very serious problem both in our country and here in our own backyard. As an Assistant Director you will play an integral part in helping all who come for food, comfort and community.  

We are looking for an individual who is committed to helping those in need and working with a variety of people from all walks of life. This individual will also need to be well organized to keep up with a busy environment, state and local safety and record keeping requirements. 

Position Summary: 

The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the soup kitchen, ensuring efficient and compassionate treatment of staff, volunteers and guests.  The Assistant Director works closely with the Executive Director to ensure program effectiveness and support the organization’s mission. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Facility Management: 

• Oversee daily operations, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for all 

guests. 

• Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and service quality. 

• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and food handling regulations. 

• Maintain facility cleanliness, security, and upkeep, coordinating repairs and maintenance as needed. 

• Monitor and manage inventory, including food, supplies, and donations, ensuring proper 

storage and distribution. 

 

Staff & Volunteer Supervision: 

• Recruit, train, and supervise staff. 

• Ensure a positive and productive volunteer experience. 

• Create staff and volunteer schedules to ensure adequate coverage and smooth operations. 

• Foster a supportive team environment that prioritizes guest dignity and service excellence. 

  

Guest Services & Community Engagement: 

• Ensure guests receive quality meals and services in a respectful and nonjudgmental manner. 

• Handle guest concerns and de-escalate conflicts when necessary. 

• Collaborate with community partners, agencies, and service providers to connect guests with additional resources. 

 

Food Service; Inventory Management: 

• Oversee meal planning and preparation, ensuring nutritious, high-quality food service. 

• Coordinate food procurement, including donations, purchases, and partnerships with local suppliers. 

• Ensure kitchen operations comply with food safety regulations and best practices. 

 

Assist Executive Director with financial aspects of running a small nonprofit organization including grant writing and financial reports.
