Shift Sergeant

The Shift Sergeant for evening-shift serves as the primary shift supervisor, providing leadership, direction, and operational oversight to Campus Safety Officers and Control Officers assigned to evening-shift operations. This position ensures consistent enforcement of departmental and College policies, coordination of daily operations, and the accurate completion of reports and documentation.

Shift Sergeant

Pay Status and Classification:Regular, full-time.

Supervisor: First Sergeant


Position Purpose: The Shift Sergeant for evening-shift serves as the primary shift supervisor, providing leadership, direction, and operational oversight to Campus Safety Officers and Control Officers assigned to evening-shift operations. This position ensures consistent enforcement of departmental and College policies, coordination of daily operations, and the accurate completion of reports and documentation.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

Administrative and Supervisory Duties

  • Review all incident reports submitted by your shift in the Maxient Reporting System and recommend approval to the Director and Information Systems Specialist.

  • Complete performance evaluations for officers assigned to the 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. shift.

  • Attend staff meetings and other scheduled meetings as directed by the Director.

  • Assume relief duties of Campus Safety Officers and Control Officers as needed.

  • Administrative duties, such as interviewing, hiring, scheduling, and approving timecards.

  • In the absence of the Director, assume an advisory role on the President’s Safety and Security Committee.

  • Participate in new employee and student orientation sessions as requested.

  • Supervise students in the Student Escort Program.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director.

Crime Prevention and Community Engagement

  • Develop and implement campus-wide training and educational materials to promote safety and compliance.

  • Conduct crime evaluations and analyses to identify trends and recommend preventative measures.

  • Establish the department’s priority crime prevention programs.

  • Act as the Department’s Public Relations Officer; representing the department in community outreach efforts, communicating safety information, building trust, and promoting the department’s public image.

  • Review and advise on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) initiatives.

  • Conduct security surveys and audits to identify areas for improvement.

Security and Patrol

  • Conduct inspections of campus lighting and telephone systems to ensure functionality and safety.

  • Prepare inspection and repair reports for the Director.

  • Collaborate with the Facilities Department to review campus plans.

  • Ensure all assigned officers perform their duties according to department policy and procedures.

Emergency Management and Response

  • Assist in developing emergency management programs, response plans, and training exercises.

  • Ensure readiness and coordination during emergency situations in collaboration with campus departments and local agencies.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred; comparable experience or certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Valid NYS driver’s license.

  • Current NYS Security Guard registration required.

  • Valid NYS Public Safety Officer certification preferred, but not required.

  • Completion of supervisor training within the first year of employment.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., walk and stand for extended periods, and climb stairs.

  • Flexibility to work holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed.

  • Demonstrated conscientiousness related to safety and ability to follow procedures.

  • Ability to exercise exceptional judgment, ensure strict confidentiality, and promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and professionalism – in a range of situations.

Compensation:

The hourly range for this position is $27.00 - $29.00 per hour. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
